  • Your anesthesia will wear off in approximately 1 to 3 hours after the procedure. It is very important not to chew on the numb side (to prevent biting tongue, lip, etc.) until the anesthesia wears off.
  • Children should be observed until the anesthesia has worn off. Due to the strange feeling of the anesthetic, many children chew on the inside of their cheeks, lips and tongue which can cause serious damage.
  • Pain/discomfort on the day of the filling may occur, which could be easily relieved by over the counter pain killers.
  • It is normal to experience some sensitivity to heat, cold and pressure after the appointment.
  • You can also expect some soreness in your gums for several days. Rinsing your mouth with warm water can help alleviate discomfort and swelling. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and then gently swish the water around the tooth and spit.
  • After the numbing wears off, you may feel you are not biting correctly. Please call so your bite can be adjusted. You may not feel this for some time if the bite is only slightly high.
  • White fillings are hard right away so you can chew on them immediately, but they may be sensitive.
  • With silver fillings, you shouldn't chew hard foods or chew directly on the new fillings for the first 24 hours. If possible, chew only on the opposite side of your mouth.
  • Call us if the soreness or sensitivity  or pain lasts for more than a week.
